Fleur de Lys presents artist Treb Larkham

Please join us for the opening reception of TREB LARKHAM’s show of paintings of flowers.

at noon 12:00 SL time, or 21:00 CET (in Europe).

I promise you will be surprised. The paintings of TREB LARKHAM bear an incredible expressive realism, hard to be described. There are many tales that may be told about them: the painter spends months on one image, she uses her own photographs, and in some paintings a very old technique, Encaustic painting. However, all this doesn’t tell anything about the intensity, and the impression, given, of being contemporary and timeless at the same time. Plus, the work does not seem to lose this when presented in Second Life. It may change, it might not be the same, but it creates a new illusive reality.

The artists LOOP LOU and MAXXO KLAAR will join and provide us with us for ambient sounds and our traditional after party dance music tunes with an experiment in sound and music mixes. We are happy to welcome the two Pomodoro Bolzano artists.

Program starts on time.

The NewERLIN Art Festival will be presented in two cities in RL on that day, in Kopenhagen and Berlin. We will start in Berlin with the meeting of the two moderators of NewBERLIN, Lastchancer Nomura, who will just have made the tour from a Kopenhagen gallery and January Lightfoot, who will be in Berlin at Directors Lounge, and who will give the the tour to the Berlin audience. Meeting point: the Directors Lounge Pavillon at NewBERLIN.

NewBERLIN is a stunningly realistic reconstruction of Berlin in Second Life starting from the most prominent spot in Berlin, Alexanderplatz with inclusion of the most recent buildings and still expanding. NewBerlin also hosts art festivals and regular exhibitions in the "Kulturbahnhof" the platform of the S-Bahn and in the Cubix building, the close-by cinema. On the day of our guided tour, NewBerlin is hosting the NewBerlin Art Festival which will also be shown life in Kopenhagen at that same day. ... of the YOUin3D.com crew, the owners of NewBerlin will show us around and will be present for Q&A.

In the short intermission, the Berlin audience will see some excerpts of a film made in Second Life and Kenia.

"Kinshasa 2.0" of which we will see an excerpt, plays both in Second Life and in the Real world and tells the story of a prominent family in Democratic Republic of Congo whose members have been divided through political exile and who can only meet in the virtual world of Second Life. The film will be premiered in full length on this year’s Berlinale.

The Berlin audience will then be let to Diabolus Island, where another exhibition takes place: CARP3, but we will see an inworld performance of two artists live on Diabolus. This will be a public online event

Diabolus Island, on the other hand, is a much more "artificial" generic environment, where selected artists experiment with the in-world possibilties of building, sculpting and scripting in Second Life. Velazques Boneto, one of the owners and founder of Diabolus is a professional programmer and IT professor provides hands-on help for the artists with programming solutions for the individual and collaborative projects which are being realized here. CARP3 is the name of the current exhibition we will visit. We will attend the Collaborative Improvisation (Virtual JAZZ) by Juria Yoshikawa, visual artist and nnoiz Papp, sound artist. Both artists are incredibly active in Second Life will almost weekly, sometimes even more frequent, activities.

Finally, the Berlin audience will be presented the film "Gaz of the Desert".

"Gaz of the Desert", on the other hand, is a film shot entirely in Second Life and tells dreamlike encounters of artist Gazira Babeli with other characters in an environment, which was an art piece by itself, and which was built by the same artist. Gazira Babeli, main actor, protagonist, stage designer and filmmaker in one person is a well-known artist who is only active in Second Life.

On two nights during Directors Lounge, the media art festival during Berlinale, we will present art from Second Life in Berlin, live at the venue in Friedrichstraße. The events will be inworld events which will be show live in the cinema in Berlin.

• SL one • Live from Second Life Sunday 10th at 11pm CET (Sonntag, 10.2. 23 Uhr)- which translates into 2pm SL time.
Performance and Installation Art live from Second Life

Featuring a performance of the Avatar Orchestra Metaverse AOM, we will visit three Second Life locations. Followed by a visit of the sparring philosphers, "ZKM Circle" (Karlsruher Kreis) at ZKM island. Introduced by Herwig Hoffmann. And finally a performance of Second Front.
Curated and guided by Olga Wunderlich

We will first meet with AOM on an oil platform on a sim, which is all under water, and which belongs the Linden Lab itself. AOM will play two compositions and then we will be teleported to art.think.box the performance space of Pomodoro Bolzano, And after that, we will visit ZKM island, where AOM will play their last piece in and around an artificial mountain surrounded by a lake, thus having the audience fly around in order to listen to the music.

Avatar Orchestra Metaverse is an orchestral formation in the virtual online environment Second Life, exploring its interactive possibilities. With new networked mediaformats like Second Life composer and performer of experimental music get new possibilities of creating works that contain open, interactive and possibly infinite elements, set into perspective conventional practices of creating and performing music and provide ideas on how to challenge the traditional division of functions as composer, performer and listener.

Like orchestra players of contemporary music, the AOM performers play compositions of different composers (mostly AOM members). The playing musicians use different instruments and follow strict or loose guidelines, sometimes given by a conductor, and sometimes more open to the creative use of the individual musicians. The instruments, which are scripted objects the performers wear, are actually played live in Second Live, thus allowing the performing artists from different countries and continents to play together music that is generated in Second Life. As the players move around space and the audience, different audience members hear or receive different impressions of the played piece, dependent (like in Real Life) on how close they are and how they move between the musicians.

From there, we will walk over to the installation "ZKM" Circle (Karlsruher Kreis), where all audience members are free to interact with the philosophers and compete with the professors of Karlsruhe on who will have the most witty slogans.

ZKM Island, the representation of Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie, Karlsuhe has been build by the »The SLatelliterates«

»The SLatelliterates« are a group of artists, datatects, students and individuals who have collaborated to create a participatory media art installation in the ZKM Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe exhibition »YOU_ser : The Century of the Consumer« curated by Peter Weibel opening 20th October 2007 in ZKM Media Museum and running two years. Their installation interweaves actual and virtual space with two works in one: »YOUniverse Moblog Movies« and »ZKM Island in Second Life«.

"Conversation", the installation on ZKM Island we will visit includes the avatars of BeatWyss, PeterSloterdijk, PeterWeibel and Boris Groys who engage in a discussion about art and philosophy. The visitors are able to participate in the discussion, which has the mis-en-scene of a competition of poets, or of a sparring of boxers, depending how we look at it. The actually happening conversation on "chat" is being recorded and transmitted onto the frontside and blog at http://youniverse.zkm.de.

The Second Front members will join us and bring us to another location where they will perform the Walking Walls - a kind of futurist museum.

Second Front claims to be the pioneering performance art group in the online avatar-based VR world, Second Life. Founded in 2006, Second Front quickly grew to its current 8 member troupe that includes Jeremy Owen Turner (Vancouver), Doug Jarvis (Victoria), Tanya Skuce (Vancouver), Gazira Babeli (Italy), Penny Leong Browne (Vancouver), Patrick Lichty (Chicago), Liz Solo (St. Johns) and Scott Kildall (San Francisco). Taking their influences from numerous sources, including Dada, Fluxus, Futurist Syntesi, the Situationist International and contemporary performance artists like Laurie Anderson and Guillermo Gomez-Pena, Second Front creates theatres of the absurd that challenge notions of virtual embodiment, online performance and the formation of virtual narrative. Created in 2006, they have already performed extensively, including in Vancouver, Chicago, New York.

The artists collaborate on divers projects lead by different members of the group. Second Front challenges the technical possibilities (scripting and building) and the social and political aspects of life in Second Life. With their performances, they question the unwritten rules of realistic simulations and the limits of community "standards" which often mirror corporate life of Real Life, and thus asking for a creative, suprising and innovative exploration of a virtual world, the possibilities of which still need to be further developed.

Pauline Baxter may be called a Second Life artist avant-la-lettre. Her work represents many aspects of what SL is or can be. In her photographs she depicts portraits, images of sexual dependency and visual political statements about freedom and the human (and avatar?) rights for self-determination: Pauline came to SL for explorations of the boundaries of life in virtual reality, not intending to do art. She very soon started a very personal and intense life style. When she first showed her photographs from SL in her private rooms, only, she was soon asked to photograph for friends and people who visited her. She thus became a portrait photographer of a very special kind: asked to take pictures, she would insist to have all freedom to do it in her ways, to do her art. The intensity of her images both shows her emotional engagement in SL and her professional background as artist in RL. Although life and art in SL still is more experiment and recreation for Pauline, her photographs from SL are inspiring, controversial and influential in many aspects.

Later in the evening, Tone Uriza, will sing and play for us. Known and appraised as "Big Daddy Blues" in SL and in RL as "Tony and the Torpedos" he will play the Blues for all of us. He already joined us some time ago as DJ during an opening and so we are very happy he will be with us with his live music.

The acclaimed singer and acoustic guitar player FABLE SINATRA will join us and perform during the opening. (Link: http://www.myspace.com/fablesinatra)

TRINDOLYN BECK's images are mesmerizing and depict "ordinary life" in 3-D. Made with a 3-D modelling program outside of SL, his scenes show how Second Life could be in near future, but also which stories and human dramas it may represent, or even maybe lived in SL. Presented with photographs, one still could call Trindolyn Beck a sculpturer, a modeller, a stage designer, and a photopgrapher. His images have been shown in RL and SL. In RL he lives in Nebraska and has been strongly evolved with the 3-D community for years.
